Some sites have reported on interesting rumor that unfortunately has very little weight to it at all. There are reports that a possible 2nd gen Zune could be out early as August…
Now really? Microsoft still have to reach the million customers target which they set to reach by mid 07. And they are going to launch a 2nd gen only 9 months after just stepping into the market? Very very unlikely.
More plausible conclusion could be a massive firm ware update adding some much anticipated features to the Zune, instead of the just fixes to existing problems. But as with the rumor mill who knows…
Cesar from ZuneInsider has revealed that new firmware will be released for the Zune in mid March (most likely 20th). The new firmware update will do the following:
Fix the skipping problem. Content acquired from Zune Marketplace will no longer skip.
Improved device and software reliability, when it comes to device detection, and an improved sync.
Changes to FM Tuner so that it doesnt drain the battery when in sleep mode anymore.Â
So now hopefully that skipping problem that’s been reported for awhile will stop bugging you and the Zune will be slightly better than it was before. The firmware will NOT feature any major upgrades. Maybe next time.
A recent update on the official Microsoft Zune web site - www.zune.net has added a surprising but expected page called “Pass it On“. On the page is talk of Podcasts support and a large rectangle feature of NPR Podcasts. Podcasts have been a long awaited feature for the Zune by many users as its been a great way for users to stay on top of the subjects that matter to them while on the move. Podcasts have also been a much talked about feature to soon be included in a future software update by Microsoft
Podcasts are well integrated into the iPod iTunes store and is a major feature to many iPod users, hopefully this will be a feature soon to come to the Zune Marketplace

According the the site TheChannelCheckers.com, the Zune is selling quite well at the consumer shop Best Buy. Reported to even be on par with iPod sales in some stores. While the Zune is going well at Best Buy, seems shoppers of the online retail giant Amazon.com cant leave their much loved iPods, were they take up the top 5 spots on the mp3 players best seller list, with Zune hovering down around the 15th mark.
