Zune Screens Cracking while Charging?
Engadget is reporting that there have been Zune screens that are getting cracked while charging. The information was provided to Engadget by a tipster who’s friend works for a call centre that handles Zune issues (Engadget has not mentioned the credibility of this tipster). The call centre has supposedly recieved many calls regarding to the Zune screens cracking after being left to charge.
The tipster’s friend has also said that the issue is due to the lithium ion battery in the Zune. The issue seems to be that the battery expands when overheating and therefore causes pressure on the screen causing it to crack. It is huge issue for Zune owners because it is not covered by Zune’s warranty and ultimatly means their Zunes are dead unless Microsoft begins covering repairs for the screens.
However, I do not believe this story to be true. My biggest issue with the story is that it was provided by a tipster’s buddy, so there is a number of people that could be lying even the customers that call in. Also, until now I haven’t heard of any issues like this happening and Zune has been out for awhile now.
Have any of you had this issue with the screen breaking while charging?Â

Yesterday night I left my Zune on charge and in the morning I found it on the carpet floor. I thought my cats must have dropped it and didn’t think much. When I turned it on, it has the exact same cracked view other’s are talking about. Surface and outside of the device is looking perfectly fine but the screen from inside when I turn it on has white cracking lines over a black screen. Zune is still playing music, though!
hey i do not believe this story because since christmas last year I have been leaving my zune charging all night and it hasnt cracked I think that the people that have called have accidently have their zune fall off and hit the ground but because there are alot of people that think that mp3 players can withstand alot so they put it on surfaces that is not flat, the battery expanding does not sound right at all many other mp3 players like the ipods or the sandisks have the same kind of battery. So i dont believe this now if you can get the tipsters buddy to get some proof then i will start beliveing that
I am not sure if “screen cracking” and what happened to mine are the same, however, there is not a scratch on the face of my zune, and under the screen, the lcd pixels have started to degrade in large patches, right above the mouse when holding it vertically, and about a quarter inch square. There are 3 of them and zunes says it isn’t covered under their warranty but I can’t figure out what warranty their reading because mine doesn’t say it’s excluded, and nor does their web site’s. Nothing has “cracked” or at least not visibly, but something is wrong and mine is 45 days old. I’m on hold with zune right now.
thats the exact same thing that happened to mine. do they cover THAT in the warranty? this is so STUPID. i’ve had it for barely 2 months, and it fell out of my pocket while playing zelda on my wii. i didnt know, and when i found it on the ground the next day, undamaged or steped on, i turn it on, and it looks like somebody chucked a marble at the lcd panel. if microsoft wont replace it(which i havent tryed yet) i say screw zune, im buyin a zen vision!!!
I HAVE HAD ZUNE FOR LESS THAN 2 MONTHS AND THE SCREEN HAS CRACKED. I NEVER EVEN MOVED IT FROM ITS LOCATION EVER AND I CALLED ZUNE AND THEY TOLD ME ITS NOT COVER SO I JUST SPENT 300 FOR NOTHING IM SO MAD. I EVEN OFFERED TO SENDIT BACK SO THEY CAN LOOK AT IT THEMSELVES. THERES NO OUTER CRACK, SCRATCH OR ANYTHING ON IT. IT’S ALL INTERAL AND i HAVE PICS TO PROVE IT YOU WANT TO SEE EMAIL ME NLOVMARCO@AOL.COM THIS IS A BIG PROBLEM AND I’M SO UPSET THERES NOTHING TO DO ABOUT IT FOR RIGHT NOW…THIS SUCKS.
My son’s Zune’s LCD cracked about 3 weeks after he got it. it was in NEW condition - we sent it back & it was replaced & delivered about 3 weeks ago. last friday, he was walking around, took it out of his pocket & the LCD screen was broken on the new one. no recharging. both zunes were in NEW condition, no chips, bumps. all he wants now is all his money back.
Mine is still cracked, or degrading or whatever you want to call it. 3.5 months old and no scratches and a big splotch of black like a pocket size etch-a-sketch. Call it like it is…. A piece of crap. Zune wont fix it because their warranty excludes it. Don’t Buy! Not Worth It! Hope yal are Listening out there, Zune warranty dept. & cust. serv. Two thumbs Down, unless they do the right thing and fix the screens. What would cost more? Fixing a screen or making millions of zune products and not selling crap cause you wont back your product?
this is a true stament. I have a zune and keep it charging durring the week so i can jam to music on the weekends but just this weekend it saw that it was cracked and i did nothing to it, then i called micrisoft and got called a lier and got told that screens don’t crack on there own. so i don’t what is going on but if this rumor is true and microsoft will not support this im never buying a zune again!
[…] employee) from ZuneInsider has basically debunked the rumours of a ‘Zune Phone’ or ‘Breaking Screens’ that we reported earlier today. He states that this is basically ‘rumor and […]
i duno what happened to my screen i got hom eone day after work and plugged it in and it was fine the next morning i was getten ready to leave grabed my zune and the screen was cracked im kinda pissed cause i took better care of my zune than i do of myself so they better cover this thing or i will take all the zunes i have bought for my girlfriend and my borthers back and get sumthing else
cause thats bs
My husbands screen cracked just yesterday… he has used it just about everyday for the last 4 months, since we got the ZUNEs. He didn’t drop it or bump into anything. It just cracked. He did call the toll free # given on ZUNE.net, where the customer service person advised that the cracked screen basically voids the warranty and he should find a place that repairs iPODs to see if they would be able to repair his ZUNE.
The only issue I’ve had is my ZUNE being fully charged and would not turn on. That’s happened twice.
It’s not cool to sale a product that is bound to malfunction and you (as in Microsoft) deny repairs…
My sister and I both bought Zunes from Walmart online, because they had a deal if you bought two at once. Hers cracked 5 weeks after we got it: She was listening to it, paused it, walked away from it for about 15 seconds, and when she looked at it, it had a huge crack on the LCD. At first, she was completely confused because the crack looks like it was caused by an impact, but obviously, there was no impact, and furthermore, the crack is only Underneath the protector screen. The outside of the Zune is completely intact, it is only the inside that is broken.
We bought the extended warranty from Walmart, hoping to cover any sort of incident like this, but now neither Microsoft nor Walmart will cover it.
Now I can only sit here and wait for mine to break for no good reason…
It’s time for Microsoft to own up to the problem with the Zune’s defective product, and quit blaming it’s customers for “mistreating” their Zunes. This is ridiculous.
Anyone want to help us sue Microsoft?
My sons screen cracked also he turned it on one day and it was craked no impact. Just an inside crack that you can see black leak threw like the lcd? Anyway what can we do I want sue. i mean $250 for junk not right. i’ve seen hundreds of storys like this one.
both me and my sister have zunes and both of them wont charge!!! we tried to plug them in different computers but they wont charge…………….. and it cant download music n e more!!!
I to have a Zune that I listened to until the battery died. After it died, it has not powered up anymore. This was the worse investment ever!
my zune no longer powers up.
My brother has had a zune for only 8 months and the screen was just cracked for no apparent reason on the inside. It seems really unfair to not be able to do anything about replacing it when you spend $300 on it and also get a $70 warranty fromt the store bought from.
So basically…really bad investment considering my brother is only 13 and doesn’t earn any money on a regular basis.
You can get a new Zune 30 from $85-$99 at most online retailers. Considering your brother had it for 8 months, then he basically gets a new Zune for $15. Not bad!
what are you talking about a new one for $15 where
I bought my son a Zune in August for his birthday. His screen is cracked and my warranty says it does not cover the cracked LCD, but I called anyway for an address to send it to. They wouldn’t even give me the address for me to pay the repair. They won’t give the address unless the call center gives you a repair order. I just want to know if it can be fixed. Same thing, though, no signs of abuse on the outer case, just powered it up and cracked screen. Very dissatisfied.
I bought a refurbished model, had it for about 6-wks and the LCD cracked for no reason. I called Microsoft and they would not even look at it! Same with me — I just wanted it fixed, at my expense not theirs! Until now, I had no idea this was a problem. WOW!
dude…zune was the worst investment of my life…microsoft should honestly have some sort of warranty for for random screen cracking…mine did this nearly a year ago and the customer support was awful so i basically wasted 270 dollars on something that sits in my room collecting dust…DO NOT BUY THIS!!
A few months ago i found my zune [in its protective case] with the LCD screen cracked. I only had it for 6 months at the time and it was in pefect condition, never dropped or placed against any pressure that could cause this problem. I called microsoft and reported what had happened thinking they would replace the screen with no problem being that it was not accidental. They completely denied any help and said it void the warranty which i had payed extra to have and basically said it was my problem and that i should go find a place to get the screen fixed. I spend $300 on their product and i refuse to have to pay even more to get it repaired because of some mysterious technical glitch. I just cant understand how a multi billion dollar company cant do the deed. Now today i find out that im not the only one in this same situation and that its a problem happening to a lot of people. That should tell Zune makers something. If nothing is done about this, zune will surely be going downhill. What a waste.
THIS “STORY” IS TRUE AND HAPPENED TO MY ZUNE AS STRANGE AS IT SOUNDS. I FOUND MY ZUNE’S LCD SCREEN CRACKED.. FROM NOTHING!! ITS NEVER BEEN DROPPEDD OR ANYTHING AND NOW I FOUND OUT THAT THIS HAS BEEN HAPPENING TO A LOT OF PEOPLE SO I KNOW IM NOT THE ONLY ONE IN THIS SITUATION. THE WORST PART IS THAT MICROSOFT IS NOT EVEN WILLING TO COMPENSATE FOR THIS ISSUE. IS IT FAIR THAT I SPENT $300 FOR A PRODUCT WHICH I ONLY HAD FOR LESS THAN A YEAR AND HAVE TO PAY AN ADDITIONAL COST TO FIX SOMETHING THAT WAS NEVER “ACCIDENTAL” YET STILL WONT BE COVERED BY MY WARRANTY? IS IT FAIR THAT COUNTLESS PEOPLE HAVE TO DEAL WITH THIS RIDICULOUS PROBLEM THAT SHOULD NOT EVEN EXIST? SO WHAT ARE WE SUPPOSE TO DO - KEEP EMPTYING OUR WALLETS? IF MICROSOFT IS NOT WILLING TO ADDRESS THIS ISSUE WE SHOULD NOT SUPPORT THEIR PRODUCTS.
My son bought his zune less than two weeks ago at best buy in trumbull, ct. He left it on his desk to charge one night and the next morning it was cracked. Best Buy says not there problem and when i called zune they told me the warranty was voided when the screen cracks. So he is out the 200 he spent for it? I will try to return to mircosoft but we will see. Any suggestions?
Cracked screen? Seems there is a problem with the zune and mircosoft wants nothing to do with it. My son bought his zune in BestBuy in Trumbull, Ct. The store and zune customer service want nothing to do with it. He is learning a harsh lesson in life. I was told unoffically by zune customer service to go to a website and look for a third party, to fix the screen. Any suggestions? The problem of cracked screens seems to be a problem, anybody say lawsuit?
