Zune Photo Auto Adjust

The Microsoft Zune allows users to upload thousands of photos. What many new Zune users don’t know is that the Zune software automatically adjusts any photos added to the Zune. No matter how large the photo, the Zune software will automatically adjust the size of the image to 640 X 480 pixels and to 20-30k in size. For instance, lets say you take a very large photo that is 8 MB in size. When you add it to your Zune it will automatically be adjusted in size and resolution. There is no need for you to do anything before uploading a picture to your Zune!

Yet, when you set an image as a background, the Zune will rotate it anyway it wants - THAT’S annoying. Any fix for that?

Awesome, didn’t know that. I had intentions to resize my photos but now I see i don’t need to.

Actually, this is incorrect.

The size it is converted to is 640px X 480px usually. You can tell by putting a large wallpaper (desktop wallpaper) onto your Zune. You can then zoom in, to double size, which is actually the full size image. This is twice the width and height of the zune screen (in pixels) and is therefore 640px X 480px.

Also, on the Zune.net site, it clearly states that the size converted is a max of 640px X 480px.

hmmmm… actually… this is not a great feature, but a terrible flaw!! i DONT WANT the zune to resize my photos down to such low resolution. I want to be able to put a 5 megapixel image on there, I mean, after all, it has 80 friggin GBs of storage. I want to put a big picture and zoom in to it many times, so I can see as much of detail as I desire. instead, it resizes it to 640×480 which totally blows. the zune is designed for lazy idiots who can’t handle and extra step… i on the other hand want the option of either making it small or keeping it full size. i want more options, not less!

I have a new 30 GB Zune and I thought that when you rotate the picture orientation would change. Am I wrong? I can’t seem to find it.

If you want to load pictures in which you can zoom in on a booger, then use the “external USB drive” hack to unlock the full use of the Zune hard drive. Copy your picks like you would if you were using a USB thumbdrive and skip the conversion all-together.
